Fluoride treatments are an integral part of any child’s dental health plan. Fluoride helps to strengthen the enamel of the teeth which protects them against decay.
What is a fluoride treatment?
A fluoride treatment is a quick procedure that usually happens at the end of a regular dental hygiene and exam appointment. During a fluoride treatment, the dental hygienist or dentist will apply fluoride to the surfaces of your child’s teeth. Fluoride strengthens the tooth enamel. Enamel protects the surface of the teeth from decay, so when it is weakened, so is the tooth’s ability to resist decay. Luckily, fluoride can help strengthen this enamel, in turn helping the teeth remain cavity-free! Fluoride treatments are quickly applied, and a sugar-free lollipop is offered following the treatment to alleviate any after taste for your child.
How often does my child need to get a fluoride treatment?
Dr. Pagé usually recommends a fluoride treatment at each cleaning appointment, once every six months. But we will examine your child’s teeth and decide if a fluoride treatment is needed based on their caries risk, age, oral hygiene, and diet.
Are there any dangers to fluoride treatments?
Fluoride is a safe beneficial dental additive. Most cities/states add fluoride to the drinking water. If you do not have city water that is fluoridated, we will be glad to help find an alternative based on your child’s needs.
